Oakland’s city hall dates this
photograph; our current city hall was built between 1911 and 1913.
It was one of Mayor Frank K. Mott’s many achievements. Our current
city hall was Oakland’s first skyscraper and was called “Mayor Mott’s
Wedding Cake” since he married in the year construction started. The
old city hall, which stood just in front of the new one, has already
been demolished, and you can see the edge of a new plaza where it
had been. Moving to the right, you can see the glass dome of the Rotunda
building and the distinctive flat iron Cathedral building at the intersection
of Telegraph and Broadway. You can see Lake Merritt in the background;
notice the undeveloped hills around it. (See Oakland, The Story of
a City, by Beth Bagwell, Presidio Press)
