Harry Fonseca was of Nisenan/Maidu/ Hawaiian/Portuguese heritage. This particular painting is from his "Stone Poems" series of large canvases. These works are influenced by petroglyphs from around Caliofornia and the Southwest, especially Utah. Not meant to be literally interpreted, the Stone Poems capture the abstract qualities of prototypical rock art through their sheer size and bold, oxide red colors. The central image of the Sun King was utilized in several other paintings in this series. PCK
