on bottom
Inscribed directly in the clay on the bottom "Voulkos" in script. The Archie Bray Foundation double beehive marked is stamped on the foot.
None known, but similar works with stylized bulls are in the collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Krannert Museum, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

This is a wheel thrown gas fired stoneware bottle with a drawing of a stylized bull on one side. The bottle was decorated using a sgraffito technique, iron oxide/slip, and glaze. The overall form is oval with a footed base and a small narrow neck that flairs outward slightly at the top.

Provenance (see Voulkos catalogue sheet from donor): Artist to Mother-in-law, Junia Cone; Cone to artist's daughter Pier Voulkos; Pier Voulkos to OMCA December 2009. Peter Voulkos most likely made this at the Archie Bray Foundation, Helena, Montana.
