Dr. Samuel Merritt, a Maine born physician, arrived in San Francisco on his own ship in 1850. He ceased active practice of medicine after moving to Oakland in 1857 and pursued a successful career as a developer, a philanthropist and a civic leader. Among Dr. Merritt's civic accomplishments were: Mayor of Oakland; the financing and donation of the 12th Street dam, creating a lake that was later named for him; and whose legacy built Merritt Hospital. This charming picture of his elaborate Victorian-era house and grounds, located at 1213 Madison Street, made by little known artist P.G. Lindsay, includes a large figure seated on the porch that resembles the 6'3" 340 lbs. bachelor Dr. Merritt.
