Four-paneled folding screen. "The asymmetrical composition of blossoming magnolia branches on a pale ochre background extends across all four panels, painted in oils accented with touches of gold leaf. Lucia [Mathews] used a wide range of colors natural to magnolia trees as well as such unexpected hues as red, blue, lavender, and black to enrich its decorative character within the narrow black frame" (The Art of Arthur and Lucia Mathews, p192).
