"Hat's Off", History Changing Gallery, May 6 - June 25, 1977

Hat, felt, powder blue, pheasant feather, early 20th century. ibm, 5/5/93: Hat is gray felt, with gray grossgrain ribbon hat band. The entire brim is stitched in bands of light gray and maroon colored thread. A brown pheasant feather sweeps to the proper left from the back of the hat where the brim has been turned up. There is a pouf of beige feather as well as a small red and a small yellow feather at the base of the larger feather. Inside at the back is a size marker "22". Black elastic band (to hold the hat in place, by running the band under the hair in the back) is attached in the inside band. Inside band at proper right reads: Darby Hats; at proper left, reads: Made expressly for Capwell, Sullivan & Furth. (Capwell, Sullivan & Furth was a department store in Oakland.) The hat probably dates c. 1939 - 1944. 1939-1941 sport/suit hat. (Joan Severa, 3/10/1994)
