pistol. Description: Single shot .41 caliber percussion pocket pistol with wood stock, carved in diamond pattern on grip and steel barrel hammer trigger and triggerguard. Marked "Deringer Philadelphia" on lock plate and top of barrel, "Made for A.J. Plate San Francisco" on top of barrel, and "P" on left side of barrel. The triggerguard, hammer. and plate are all engraved with a floral pattern. (Barry Hopp, 1982) Henry Derringer Pocket Pistol, in production from 1830's through 1868. 41 caliber percussion pistol. Single shot. Muzzle-loading. 4 1/2" overall. 1 7/8" round barrel with flat top and semi-octagonal breech. Seven groove rifling. Walnut stock with checkered grip and bird's head butt. Made without ramrod provision. Back action lock. Lockplate engrved with floral scrolls and marked behind hammer "DERINGER/PHILADELa." German silver trigger guard, tear-shaped butt cap, sideplate, flash plate, key escutcheions and shield escutcheon. Top of barrel marked at breech "DERINGER/PHILADELa." Left side of barrel marked with a "P" within a sunburst motif. Agent markings "MADE FOR/A.J. Plate/SAN FRANCISCO" on top of barrel, though of spurious application.
