4 inch by 2 inch section of the suspender cable from the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Description: Steel, supports the roaddbed structure from the main cable on the suspension bridge southern crossing. From The History Information Station: Object: Section of cable; bundles of wire encased in metal strapping. This type of cable supports the roadbed structure from the main cable on the suspension section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. History: Oakland and San Francisco were first joined by ferry boats. Railroad passengers arriving from the East, left their trains in Oakland and took ferries across the bay. Commuters also rode ferry boats daily between the two cities. But with an increase in automobile traffic, there was a demand for a bridge across the Bay. Construction began on the Bay Bridge in 1933, and it was opened in 1936. At 8 1/4 miles long, it is the longest steel bridge in the world. Gift of Benjamin Balala
