Printed below the second paragragh in black capitalized letters is "New York, April, 1869." The preface is printed within a train theme border. The train theme border is in red ink on the front and back page. The border shows two train tracks crossing over each other to form the top left and top right corners. The bottom left and bottom right corners show a train on railroad tracks. At the bottom center edge are two tracks that merge at a sunset. A straight line connects to each corner.
