Hat. Description: Hat, red felt, with small brim and proportionally taller crown, hat band and two decorative feathers made out of the same felt, held on by means of a cord of black elastic that went around the back of the head. Condition excellent. 10" x 8 5/8" x 4 3/4". History: Made by donor who was a professional milliner in Oakland for over 30 years, worked for Mae Niedt, Addy's and had her own shop. She went out of business in 1972. Shops were located on Grand Ave. between Broadway and Webster, donor's label was "Miss Helen." Donor made this hat. Donor dated this hat as 1933, however unless it was very avant gard 1945 seems a more likely date. See "100 Years of Costume in America," by Rose Netzorg Kerr, 1951, page 63. Felt in hat of fine quality; worn perched on front of head. Hand stitching on piping at brim edge visible. "Feathers" interesting. Post war suit hat. (Joan Severa, 3/10/1994)
