History: About the title poem, Lawrence Ferlinghetti wrote, "Well, I hope all these people see that the poem is not aimed at Mister Eisenhower personally, but at The President. He is a Real Nice Man. Just like Dad. Trueblue. Just not too bright in his President's uniform... You may hate the uniform for the power of the state it represents, but the man inside it is not it. Ferlinghetti was not only a major Beat writer, he was also owner of City Lights Books publishing company and bookstore. City Lights Books published many Beat poets and the store was a center of Beat community life. Museum Purchase
