References/Remarks: Formerly L83.58.1 in Dawson, Lawrence E. and James Deetz, "A Corpus of Chumash Basketry", Annual Reports of the University of California Archaeological Survey 7:193-276. Los Angeles. From the History Information Station "Object: Basketry tray collected among the Chumash. It was made by coiling on a bundle foundation of 'juncus,' a rush, and grass. The sewing material is sumac, and the design black 'juncus.' History: The native peoples of Southern California used baskets as kitchen utensils, dishes, serving trays, and for the storage of household items. You might have noticed that this tray is not quite flat. This is because the weave changed at the outer rim of the basket. This suggests that the basket was probably completed by a different weaver."
