This quilt block was entered in the "School Quilt Block Competition, 1998, co-sponsored by P & B Textiles and the Oakland Museum of California. Students had to incorporate into their quilt block three pieces of P & B textiles (provided to them through the competition kit) which had been developed from 19th century fabrics in the collections of the Oakland Museum of California. An exhibition "Fabrications" was held at the museum from May 16 - July 5, 1998. This quilt block was the 2nd prize winner for grades 9 - 12, made by Venus M. Wei and Siu Fan (Linda) Tien, 11th grade students at Oakland High School, Oakland, Jackie Begrin, teacher. The block features the P & B yellow and red acorn print as a large border, with a narrower white lace border over that. In the center is black fabric and a map of the state of California appliqued of twill weave and clear plastic, held in place with metallic gold cord. Under the plastic is a California poppy made of fabric. "Gold Fever" is embroidered in the upper proper left corner of the black area; "1850 (with a pick) 1998" is written on the black fabric in metallic gold pen.
