In 1902, pyrite rich in sulphur was discovered on Boehmer's ranch near Laundry Farm and Leona Heights. Before 1938, there were four pyrite mines in the area including one, the Alma Mine, named after Boehmer's daughter. The large quarry near this site, which came to be known as the Devil's Punch Bowl and later Leona Quarry, produced rock, gravel, and rhyolite used in the paving of many roads in the Oakland area.
