This is a leaded glass window advertising "Brooklyn Steam Beer." It was used at the King's X Tavern in Oakland, CA for many years. Brooklyn township became a part of Oakland in 1906. It was the region roughly on the east side of Lake Merritt to San Leandro. This is now known as East Oakland. Primarily an industrial district, the region saw an economic downturn after the 1970s as factories closed. THe Brooklyn Brewery was a division of San Francisco Brewing Ltd., and operated from about 1875 to 1919. It is speculated that it closed due to the federal Prohibition Act of 1919. The brewery was located on the corner of 18th Avenue and 14th Street in Brooklyn. The King's X was a sports bar on the corner of Piedmont and Pleasant Valley Road from 1968 to 2005. It was operated by Andy Mousalimas, wife Mary, and John Kumarelas. In 1991 it was sold to Nicholas Haney. The glass window had decorated the building since the early twentieth century. It was made in 1905 by Dumbrinck of Oakland, and has Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts design elements. "Brookyn" is of pebbled ruby glass, with touches of greens, pink, white and tan. The window is enclosed in a wooden frame with a lite box for illumination from behind. An article about the bar and window appeared in the Oakland Tribune by Frosene Phillips, Nov. 11, 2005.
