Poster has an image of a colonial school house. There is a teacher sitting at a desk with boy and girl students standing before him. Under the image is "Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America: Our Public Schools." Below the main caption is small text that reads, "From the little red school house to our magnificent state universities is a far cry and in that cry - the voice of prganized labor stands out. No government based upon the proposition that all men are created equal can long stand without giving all men the opportunity of education. In its first convention in 1881 the American Federation of Labor resovled in favor of legistation making the education of children compulsory so that all might know their rights and duties under the law. In 1894 gathered in covention the unions of the American Federation of Labor solemnly proclaimed - "Education should be the watchword of the labor movement in order that the masses may fully realize the importance of unity of action regardless of color or creed." One of a series of posters produced by this union honoring the role of laborers throughout history around the world. [LMC]
