Photograph. Date: Late 19th century. Description: College of the Holy Names, Oakland. (6/2002, G. Weininger) from Beth Bagwell, Oakland: The Story of a City, 1982, p.115ff: College of the Holy Names, originally Convent of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, was established in 1868 along the northern shore of Lake Merritt as a school for young girls. In 1880 it was also chartered as a college but initially trained only those young women who would enter the order; in 1917 it was opened as a junior college to girls of other backgrounds and in 1925 expanded to become a senior college. Its move to the Oakland hills in 1957 was financed by sale of the original property to Kaiser Industries.
