From the History Information Station: Object: Movie posters for "Beach Party" and "The Grapes of Wrath." History: Hollywood has frequently used the popular image of California as the backdrop for movies. These two posters illustrate different ways film makers have approached the subject of California life. "Beach Party" was one of a series of surf-and-romance teenager movies of the 1960s. It is based on the carefree life-style of the post-World War II generation. "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940) was based on a 1939 novel by John Steinbeck. It graphically depicted the struggles of the "Okies," migrant farmers devasted by drought and the Depression, who had moved to California to find work. Museum Purchase
