type basket known as "egg basket" in Tuolumne County. (Craig Bates, 8/94) All material brought to Oakland Museum by Winifred Hirsch was in the possession of Gladys Spaulding. They provided the following information: "Most of artifacts belonged to Dr. York, who died prior to 1940. At the time he was living in Santa Cruz, having established a medical practice there. Following the destruction of his practice in San Francisco earthquake, Spaulding received the material following the death of York's wife, who was the mother of Spaulding's first husband. (three Indian baskets, brass "bull" ashtray, gourd, shell gift to York from grateful patient) Mrs. York was born Katherine Nucholls in the Ukiah area. The school bell was used in her school in Redwood Valley. A couple of the trinkets were hers. The small night lamp was in my father's home at Moorgate which is near Millbrook, Stalybudge, England. (Now incorporated into Greater Manchester.)" NOTE: the museum only accepted the baskets into the collection. "Egg basket given its name because it will hold a dozen eggs without breaking. This basket has a redbud handle and is wrapped in ratan." (Craig Bates: 10/01).
