Theinscription on the back of the photo reads "Looking down Broadway frrom 8th St. 1869" Broadway in this scene is a dirt road with wagon tire marks on its surface. At left there is a tiered three-storey buidling, on whose roof is a sign reading "Phoenix .... Insurance" At right side of the street there are two-storey commerical buidlings. The sidewalkson both side of the street are covered by pillar-supported roofs. Thereare wagons at the left side of thestreetand a buggy at the right. The road slopes down to the estuary.
