Peter. Peter Lew. Peter

Paper bound book used by sisters Bette and Peggy Chinn when they were students at the Chinese School in Oakland. The school was located at 9th and Harrison in the first free public Chinese Community Center, which was sponsored by Joe Shoong Foundation. Students attended class from 4:00 - 6:00 pm when they were young, and from 6:00 - 8:00 pm when they were high school students. Some of the pieces in this collection were also used by Bette's and Peggy's mother, Mary Lew Chinn, and their uncles Peter and Roy Lew. One colored illustration at the beginning of the book shows an adult talking with two children in a garden; willow tree to one side, wall with moon gate at the other side. Many black and white illustrations on the inner pages including a charming one of a mouse or rat court, with a lady mouse being carried by a procession of courtly mice (or rats).

Chinese reader for grade school, titled ` Newly Edited Chinese Reader for Teaching'. It covers subjects dealing with daily living, interaction among family members, the weather, the plants, and the animals. ( E. Lee May 2005)
