NYC / Michael Lucero / 1984 - inscribed on bottom

Glazed ceramic sculpture of a large semi-abstract human head. The head rests on its right side with left ear visible at top center. On the side where the neck would attach to the head, the surface is stepped in rectangular sections. Instead of a domed surface, the top of the skull is flat and contains on its surface a graphic of cylindrical buildings with smoke stacks flanked by staircases at lower right and left. The surface of the head is painted overall with a landscape of angular and organically shaped brown and pink rock formations. A grassy plain with a leafy green tree near an angled shoreline is visible at front center between rock formations, and a large branch stretches across the left cheek. The painted surface is matte overall except for areas along the lower side of the head, which have a lined texture and are glazed glossy blue.
