In 1931 in a letter to Mr. Kaiser, sculptor Rupert Schmid states "California Venus or California Poppy A California representative girl was selected as model. She is holding in her lap poppies, and also at her feet and head are some of those flowers. It was carved with the aid of Professor Alessandro in white Carrera marble. The statue came too late for the World's Fair, and later I sold it for $3000 to Mrs. McGowan...."
