The proportions of height to width in this composition vary according to the print. It seems that if Weston intended a particular print of this image for publication, he made it in a rectangular format. If, however, he planned to include it in an exhibition, the image would be almost square. Of course, a square arrangement, as opposed to a rectangular one, will give greater emphasis to the flatness and geometrical tendencies of the forms--and abstraction will become a more significant issue [Amy Conger, "Edward Weston: Photographs," catalog # 151].
