Cheese box. Description: wooden, painted red, single stave looped and nailed "Extra Cream Cheese" block printed on side. "...California Market Sts. San Francisco" printed on bottom. Dimensions: 1'3" dia., 10 1/2" high, top 11"high.
From the History Information Station:
Settlers purchased cream cheese form local grocers and brought it home wrapped in wax paper and packed in wooden boxes. Stored in a cool cellar or storehouse, cream cheese would stay fresh for several weeks or even months, depending on the weather.
