Carved wood ornament from interior of Alameda County Court House. Located at 5th and Broadway, the court house was built in 1875. It was the third court house, the first was located at Niles, the second in San Leandro. The present court house located across the street from the Oakland Museum was built in 1937. The previous court house was used for other county offices until it was demolished in 1951. The donor's grandfather, Lemuel E. Woodworth, an Oakland grocer, was given the ornament as he watched the demolition. There is a letter in the donor file describing how donor's grandfather helped save Hills Bros. Coffee Company which was affected by the Fire and Earthquake of 1906.
