Oakland Auditorium from across Lake Merritt. Miniature photograph album of Oakland c. 1925 Betsy Willcuts, June 2002 Bibliography: THE HEART OF OAKLAND, A Walking Guide to Lake Merritt by Leslie Flint, Sponsored by the Camron-Stanford House Preservation Association The Oakland Auditorium was the first of the civic center buildings to be built in 1914. The Auditorium has classical Roman details appropriate for a "temple to culture." The Auditorium has hosted cultural events ranging from wood-track bicycle races, circuses and horse shows, to concerts, plays and pageants. The Oakland Art Galley was opened in one of the auditorium's upper halls in 1916. The Art Galley's collection formed the core of the Art Department of the present Oakland Museum of California. Note: The name of the auditorium has been changed to The Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center.
