Tribune caption on the back, July 18, 1934-- "Even while city and county officials and National Guardsmen (upper) were conferring today over means of bringing supplies in to the Eastbay, food trucks (lower) moved into the district rapidly without union 'permits.' In this conference are: (Left to right, seated) Colonel Otto Sandman, Mayor William J. McCracken, Lieutenant-Colonel Ralph Merritt and District Attorney Earl Warren, and (standing) City Manager John F. Hassler and Sheriff M. B. Driver.- Tribune photo." Photo shows three trucks loaded with boxes and crates driving down the street. In the background are of the buildings of the downtown Oakland skyline including the Tribune tower. The photo was printed in reverse. The 1934 San Francisco general strike shut down Oakland as well as San Francisco for several days in early July. Oakland union workers sympathized with the San Francisco waterfront workers who were striking and who had called for a general strike after two union members were murdered by police in San Francisco.
